Japan is blessed with no lack of attractive scenery, but of all the landscapes in the country, the most beautiful, many would claim, is found in Matsushima. Located in Miyagi Prefecture, some 300 kilometers to the northeast of Tokyo, Matsushima is the name given to a group of over 260 tiny, scenic islands in Matsushima Bay. So highly regarded is this classic vista of pine-covered islets that it has for centuries been included among the Three Most Beautiful Sights in the country.
As one might expect from a place with such maritime links, Miyagi Prefecture prides itself on its seafood, and Shiogama, not far from Matsushima, is one of the busiest landing ports in Japan for tuna and bonito. These fine fish are perhaps at their most succulent when enjoyed as fresh sashimi at one of Shiogama's seafood restaurants. Another notable local delicacy is kamaboko, a cake prepared from several different kinds of fish and often eaten grilled. Also enjoyed in Miyagi Prefecture is kaki dengaku, an appetizing concoction that consists of oysters topped with a miso sauce and grilled on the shell.
It would be hard to find a better accompaniment to the delectable fare of Miyagi than the local sake, and here a brew to watch for is made by Saura Brewery. With a history dating back to 1724, Saura Brewery has long been one of the leading sake producers in northeastern Japan. Among the range of quality sakes created at this brewery, one particular treat is Urakasumi Zen, a well-rounded, balanced, fragrant sake that has a cool, dry flavor. Just as noteworthy is the sake known simply as Urakasumi, which combines a relaxed and mellow character with a dry flavor profile. These two varieties point to some of the greatness of which quality sake is sometimes capable. |
