Carbon offsetting

Carbon offsetting is the act of ‘reducing net CO2 emissions’ or ‘reducing net CO2 emissions to zero’. It was launched for the first time in 1995 by the CarbonNeutral Company (Future Forest at the time) of England, which offered this scheme for individuals, and rapidly spread in Europe and the US from around 2005. In Japan, there have been more than 300 cases of carbon offsetting already as an effective means of preventing global warming. (*1)In this text, greenhouse gases, which are said to cause global warming, are generalized as CO2.

To respond to comments from customers who are deeply concerned about environmental protection and the prevention of global warming, JAL Group offers various ways of offsetting CO2 gases produced by aircraft boarded by the customers. Visit the specified carbon offsetting provider(*2) via JAL's website, choose and support a sustainable development project for renewable energy, and such, and thereby neutralize or “offset” all or part of those CO2 emissions. (*2) Recycle One, a carbon offsetting provider that actually assists customers with carbon offsetting.

To offset CO2 emissions, carbon credits for the amount of carbon offsetting requested by the customer will be canceled, and will be able to help customers reducing CO2 emissions of the entire planet.

JAL Group offers customers the opportunity to offset CO2 emissions attributable to their journey. (The date of nullification will be written on the carbon offset certificate which can be downloaded after offsetting.)

Projects which customers can support utilize the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) carbon credits of the UN, an initiative under the Kyoto Protocol that allows industrialized countries to invest in emission reduction projects in developing countries. All CO2 reductions are certified by the UN, thus it can be that the amount of CO2 emissions are the most reliable in the world. JAL Group has been cooperating with Recycle One (Japanese Associate of the CarbonNeutral Company of UK, ) CO2 emissions will be calculated, based on the logic concerning CO2 calculation announced by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), which has been adopted by airlines around the world.

Attention
Please confirm the following points concerning carbon offsets before participating.

1. This carbon offset service aims to reduce CO2 emission through voluntary contributions from customers.
2. The customers’ contributions will be used only for projects relating to carbon credits certified by the UN (e.g. CDM projects under the Kyoto Protocol).
3. CO2 calculations are estimated amounts derived from the formula announced by ICAO（International Civil Aviation Organization）. It does not reflect accurate CO2 emissions of the flight actually boarded by the customer. The estimate is subject to change due to
amendments of the logic for calculation announced by ICAO.
4. The customers’contributions will be handled only by payment with a credit card. We will not make a refund after a credit card payment, even
if a flight is cancelled or changed.
5. This carbon offsetting service is provided by Recycle One. A carbon offset agreement will be concluded between the customer and Recycle
One. Therefore, Recycle One will answer any inquiries regarding calculation of CO2, payment procedures, and such.
