What is Team -6%?

Team –6%, in which JAL participates, is a project backed by the Ministry of the Environment aiming to achieve a 6% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions, which was the figure set as the Japanese target in the Kyoto Protocol in 1997.

Environmental Activities

1. Tropospheric Observation
Investigating warming mechanisms is important in establishing measures to counter global warming. JAL has cooperated with research into the concentration of greenhouse gases in the troposphere since 1993. The company installed tropospheric-sampling equipment on aircraft flying routes between Australia and Japan. As a result, JAL was the first airline in the world to confirm that the concentration of greenhouse gases in the troposphere differs depending upon the latitude.

In 2003, a new tropospheric-observation project began. Funded by a grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, JAL developed continuous CO2-measuring equipment (CME) as a cooperative project between industry and academia. As a result, it has become possible to gain an understanding of greenhouse-gas concentrations at points along various routes flown by aircraft traveling to and from Japan.

2. Recycling
We dispose of waste materials generated through our air-transport business in line with legal regulations and requirements, and we promote the reduction and recycling of waste materials. Our major recycling activities are as follows.

  • Recycling Onboard the Aircraft
Aluminum cans and paper resources, including inflight magazines
  • Recycling at Our Cargo Division
Plastic sheeting used to wrap cargo, and wood used for packaging purposes
  • Recycling at Our Maintenance Division
Reuse of water used in maintenance operations, and partial recycling of wastewater sludge
  • Other
Recycling of uniforms, reducing the generation of paint-remover waste through the introduction of unpainted aircraft, sorting and recycling of paper waste, reduction in paper used since the introduction of e-tickets

3. Office Temperature
The JAL Group is engaged in energy preservation and efforts aimed at preventing global warming. Our concrete activities to these ends include running an energy-preservation campaign, whereby the company implements such energy-saving activities as allowing staff to remove their ties in summer, as well as setting the temperature in our offices at appropriate levels in summer and winter.

Company Programs
  • Temperature levels
28°C in summer (Cool Biz campaign) and 20° in winter
  • Water conservation
  • Eco-drives
  • Electricity conservation
