Marunouchi, The Imperial Palace

General Ohta Dokan built this palace in 1457 and for 264 years after the first Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu entered the city at the start of the Tokugawa Shogunate the palace was known as Edo Castle. The focal point of the Meiji Restoration, the castle changed name to The Imperial Palace when the then Meiji Emperor took up residence in the new capital of Tokyo.

To the north of the Imperial Palace is an area rich in greenery known as Kitanomaru Park. The Science Museum, the Nippon Budokan, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and National Archives of Japan can all be found in the park.

The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace |

These gardens are the only gardens in the Imperial Palace open to visitors. The gardens have a total area of around 210,000 square meters and a walk in the gardens enjoying the history of the area is well recommended.

The Marunouchi exit of Tokyo Station was constructed 80 years ago with over 7.6 million red bricks to produce a facade that is known throughout Japan and is similar in style to the main station in Amsterdam.

This building was opened in 1923 and featured shopping areas on the first floor with the second floor reserved for public use. As such, it attracted a lot of interest at the time; the end of the Taisho period. The building was reconstructed in 2002 with 37 floors and is now a business-cum-culinary-cum-retail symbol of Marunouchi as Japan enters the 21st century.

Marunouchi Oazo, a commercial complex built just north of JR Tokyo Station, opened September in 2004. A commercial building in the complex houses 24 restaurants and bars from the first Floor to the sixth floor, and a bookstore boasting an inventory of about 1.2 million books, one of the biggest in Japan run by Maruzen Co. It also houses the 205-room Marunouchi Hotel, from the seventh floor to the 17th floor.

Naka-Dori Street runs from Yuraku-cho to the Marunouchi district and contains a large number of exclusive outlets including brand boutiques and fashionable restaurants. The street is a continual hive of activity and along its length many different aspects of Marunouchi can be seen.
