Chu-ken "Hachi" ("Hachi", the Faithful Dog) |
A bronze statue of an Akita dog named Hachi was erected at Shibuya Station in 1934. The dog used to walk with his master, Ueno Eizaburo, a professor at the Imperial University of Tokyo (the modern day Tokyo University), between his home and shibuya Station everyday. Even after Mr. Ueno died in May of 1925, Hachi continued walking to the station for ten years because he believed his master would one day return. In praise of Hachi's loyalty to his master the bronze statue was erected in the ninth year of the Showa period (1934).

Yoyogi Koen (Yoyogi Park) |
Yoyogi Park was opened in the forty second year of the Showa era (1967). It used to be the Yoyogi area military parade grounds for the Japanese Imperial Army but after World War II it became a housing area for the occupying U.S. Army called Washington Heights. During the Tokyo Olympic Games it was used as the site of the then Olympic Village and today plays host to a park, a soccer ground, a cycling course and an open-air theater.

Meiji Jingu (Meiji Shrine) |
Meiji Jingu was constructed in the ninth year of the Taisho era (1920) in order to enshrine the spirit of the Meiji Emperor who died in 1912 along with his consort, the Empress Shoken. The Dai-ni Torii is 12 meters high and 17.1 meters wide and is the highest wooden Myojin Torii in Japan at this time. The iris garden in Gyoen, the Inner Garden, was a favorite of the Imperial couple and is best visited when in full bloom around mid-June although the irises do attract a lot of visitors at this time.
