JAPAN AIRLINES TO BAN SMOKING ON INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS FROM APRIL 1 1999

From April 1 1999 Japan Airlines will ban smoking on all international flights.

JAL's move is in line with the international trend to non-smoking flights and is being made following a passenger survey which indicated that a majority of passengers sup-ported a ban, even on long-haul flights.

With this international flight no-smoking ban, all JAL flights - international and domestic - will be non-smoking. JAL's 240 daily domestic flights have been totally non-smoking since September 1.

In April 1988 JAL was the first Japanese airline to introduce a smoking ban on domestic flights of up to one hour's duration. This was extended in October 1990 to cover two-hour flights, which included 43 of JAL's 51 domestic routes.
