Dangerous Goods
What Are Dangerous Goods?
Explosives, poisons, gasoline and kerosene may immediately come to mind as dangerous goods. Apart from these, however, a number of products we use in our daily lives, including dry ice for freezing foodstuffs, automobile batteries, aerosols and perfume, are also treated as dangerous goods in the context of air transport. The transport of these dangerous goods is restricted by the Civil Aeronautics Law and relevant regulations. It is possible to air-freight such items only where the contents declared by the shipper, packaging and labels, along with the volume, comply with these regulations.

Dangerous Goods Are Prohibited Onboard the Aircraft
When dangerous goods are transported on aircraft, there is the danger of ignition. Verbal confirmation is taken from all passengers at the check-in counter and security checkpoint to make sure they are carrying no prohibited dangerous goods. We ask for passenger understanding and cooperation as the discovery of goods deemed to be a flight hazard may result in confiscation and destruction of said goods. If passengers are not sure whether specific goods constitute a flight hazard, they should call JAL international reservations and information or speak directly to airport officials.

*The content of conversation with the customer may be recorded or monitored to ensure quality service.

The following items are allowed as checked and/or carry-on baggage.

  • Alcoholic Beverages(when in retail packagings, containing more than 24% but not more than 70% alcohol by volume, in receptacles not exceeding 5l, with a total net quantity per person of 5l)(containing not more than 24% alcohol is unlimited)
  • Medical & Toilet Articles(under 0.5kg or 0.5l/bottle, under 2kg or 2l/person)
  • Dry Ice(under 2.5kg/person)
  • A lighter(under 1 piece/person, carry-on baggage only/Please do not leave your lighter behind when disembarking the aircraft)
  • A safety match (One small packet, carry-on baggage only)
  • Ammunition(under 5kg gross weight/person, checked baggage only)
  • Hair curler containing hydrocarbon gas with the safety cover over the heating element(under 1 piece/person, Hair curler cannot be used in the aircraft.)
  • Aerosol for sporting or home use(except for flammable gas and toxic gas)(under 0.5kg or 0.5l/bottle, under 2kg or 2l/person, checked baggage only)

  • Reasons Undeclared Dangerous Goods May Not Be Transported
JAL comes into contact with numerous instances of undeclared dangerous goods among goods accepted as freight or mail. When dangerous goods that violate the Civil Aeronautics Law are transported without being declared, there is a serious danger of explosion or ignition; also, corrosive material may destroy important wiring and instruments, causing serious accidents.

Eradicating the Transport of Undeclared Dangerous Goods
The JAL Group conducts rigorous checks prior to shipping to ensure no undeclared dangerous goods are contained in freight containers. Campaigns aimed at preventing the transport of dangerous goods are also carried out on a regular basis, when — with the understanding of our clients — JAL transfers freight-container contents to other containers in an effort to uncover undeclared dangerous goods. Point-of-entry checks alone by airlines are insufficient to prevent the transport of dangerous goods — this cannot be achieved without the cooperation of each individual connected with air transport, including our customers. We ask for customers’ ongoing understanding and cooperation.
