Akita prefecture is located in the northwest part of the northern Japan and its west coast faces the Sea of Japan. Akita has been blessed with a forest, mineral resources, marine products, rice and water and experiences the most snowfall in Japan. In winter the northwestern monsoon brings the severe cold and snow to Akita. Sake brewing usually starts from around November when the chilly winter climate starts and reaches its peak in a cold, snowy winter. The snow refreshes the air and keeps the brewery with the most suitable temperature for Sake brewing. This helps to produce a rich fine taste of Sake of Akita.
Akita has the various beautiful faces of nature, such as Lake Tazawa-ko, the deepest lake in Japan, Lake Towada-ko known for its mystique beauty, or the Oga-hanto peninsula with its beautiful coastline. Akita has also many traditional unique festivals and the most famous one is the Akita Kanto-matsuri festival, which is held every summer in Akia city, the capital of Akita prefecture.
