Renowned for his love of shochu, the founder of the Yoshinaga Shuzo distillery, Kamejiro Yoshinaga, actually developed his bootleg shochu production into the family's official business. Now, four generations later, the distillery is run by Shunko Yoshinaga. Rihachi, an imo-shochu, is named after the second owner, Rihachi Yoshinaga.
The distillery is located at the southern end of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, a spot famous for the steaming-hot sand baths that utilize underground heat. We go to great lengths to achieve a fuller and deeper umami flavor. We use pots in our fermentation process that date back to the Meiji Period (1868 to 1912), and produce shochu in small batches requiring careful temperature control. |
