The world-renowned city of Kyoto is famous for its historical architecture and unique cultural traditions.
Kyoto is also home to a long-standing sake brewing tradition that can be traced back to the time when rice cultivation was first introduced to the islands of Japan. The sake breweries of Kyoto are guardians of a sake brewing tradition that has been handed down with the utmost care over the generations. Many of Kyoto's sake breweries can be found in Fushimi-ku, an area of the city not far from Kyoto Station. Water is a crucial component of any sake, and the water here is perfect for sake brewing. The medium hard water is known for its optimal, iron-free balance of potassium, calcium and other minerals.

The term onna sake ("female sake") is often used to describe Fushimi sake, giving an indication of its delicate, palatable flavor.Fushimi-ku is located in the southern tip of Kyoto's city limits, and can be easily reached by train from Osaka. If you are visiting the Kansai region, we heartily recommend that you include a visit to Fushimi-ku in your travel plans.

Brewery tours and sake tasting may not be available at some breweries. Please phone ahead to avoid being disappointed.
