BATON 01

Maintenance Engineer

A reliable doctor
who assures safety and quality

ABOUT

Aircraft are composed of some millions of parts. Maintenance engineers must keep abreast with advances in knowledge on aircraft and aviation technology, as they support safe flight operations on the frontline with their sound knowledge and technical skills nurtured over the years. They must have high awareness and professionalism in order to achieve self-growth.
Maintenance can be largely divided into aircraft maintenance (line maintenance, aircraft inspection, maintenance, painting) and maintenance of parts performed in repair shops (maintenance of engines and accessories).

INTERVIEW

I perform line maintenance after an aircraft arrives at the airport. It must be completed before it takes off for its next flight, so it is a fight against time. My colleagues and I perform safety checks required by law and refurbishments to improve cabin comfort and quality within a limited time. We also perform repairs caused by unexpected occurrences such as repairs when lightning strikes an aircraft. It is highly responsible professional work, requiring speed and accuracy.

If we inspected the damaged area after the aircraft arrived, repair work would be delayed, and consequently affect on-time departure. Therefore, we coordinate with pilots and cabin attendants during flight, and receive information in advance on the area which was struck by lightning or which seat is not working properly so that we can prepare the necessary equipment to carry out repairs, check the appropriate maintenance method, and perform maintenance speedily and precisely. Providing a safe aircraft is accomplished through air-ground teamwork.

To provide safe aircraft and comfortable cabins and ensure on-time operations, each maintenance task is executed meticulously. "Complete each process perfectly to achieve the best results." This is our motto to deliver maximum customer satisfaction. Every maintenance engineer has a strong sense of responsibility and plays a vital role in assuring JAL's safety. We believe that by passing the baton with confidence, we can provide customers with safe and comfortable flights. We will set ambitious goals without limiting ourselves and continue to work faithfully.

HANGAR
Aircraft
inspection
and maintenance

We erect a steel frame around an aircraft, inspect every corner from various angles, and perform maintenance without overlooking any problem no matter how small it is. Aircraft inspection and maintenance can be compared to a thorough medical checkup. As maintenance engineers have various specialized skills, they can be called a specialist of aircraft. We hone our skills and deepen our knowledge each day to provide aircraft in perfect condition.

Engine
Maintenance

The engine creates high-temperature gases of over 1000℃ from air of minus 50℃ temperatures and fuel, and generates hydraulic pressure, air pressure and electric power for producing thrust and operating various aircraft systems. It is the "heart" of an aircraft and the culmination of cutting-edge technologies. We disassemble the engine, inspect each component, repair and change parts, and reassemble the engine so that it demonstrates its original performance.

Accessory maintenance

As professionals of component maintenance, we perform maintenance effectively and responsibly to assure the quality of every component installed on aircraft. We not only repair defective components, but also monitor the quality of components installed on aircraft, remove them before they malfunction or repair installed parts in order to provide high quality components and support the operation of every flight.

Painting

The main purpose of painting is to protect aircraft surfaces and keep them beautiful. Coats of paint protect aircraft, which operate in severe conditions (high and low temperatures, ultraviolet rays, etc.). From the perspective of beauty, we apply paint schemes on aircraft to promote the JAL Brand. We work hard to improve our skills, maintain the quality of painting, and contribute to enhancing the JAL Brand.

AIRPORT
Line
maintenance

We conduct necessary inspections and maintenance on arrival aircraft to prepare them for the next flight. We receive reports from flight crew and cabin attendants during flight, and after arrival, inspect conditions with our own eyes, make necessary repairs, and provide aircraft on time. We maintain safety and on-time operations through our extensive knowledge on aircraft, qualified skills, and many years of experience.
