Noise

To reduce the noise generated by aircraft, JAL is adding to its fleet more state-of-the-art, quieter aircraft, and is implementing flight practices aimed at reducing noise as much as possible.
Quieter Aircraft
With advances in aircraft-engine technology over the last few decades, noise levels have been greatly reduced. The noise generated by a mid-sized Boeing 767 is as much as 20 decibels lower compared to DC-8 and 707 aircraft of similar dimensions made in the 1960s. To human ears, that represents a reduction of about 25%. JAL will introduce the Boeing 787 into its fleet in fiscal 2008. The 787 generates approximately 40% less noise at takeoff than the similar-sized 767.

Quieter Takeoffs and Landings
When residential areas are situated close to the airport, JAL pilots do their best to rise quickly to a high altitude after takeoff, thus reducing noise heard at ground level. Care is also taken to avoid residential areas when circling while waiting to land. When coming in to land, JAL pilots delay lowering the landing gear and flaps for as long as possible, as these components experience air resistance, which generates noise.
