Waste Materials

A variety of waste materials are removed from aircraft after landing, such as bottles and cans used during inflight meal services, newspapers and magazines read onboard and plastic sheeting used for packaging air freight. JAL makes every possible effort to recycle these materials.
Disposal
In the case of inbound international flights to Narita and Kansai airports, cabin crew collect and sort discarded aluminum cans and newspapers before passing them on to recycling merchants. The monthly magazines provided onboard the aircraft amount to 250 tons of paper per year, all of which is recycled. The paper products produced from those recycled magazines are equivalent to approximately 1.2 million rolls of toilet paper.
Recycling
The plastic sheeting used to protect air freight against water and dust on inbound flights to Narita, Kansai and Nagoya airports is recycled after use to make wheel chocks and garden supplies. JAL also recycles the uniforms worn by flight and cabin crew and ground staff, giving them a second lease on life as noise-reduction and heat-shield materials used in automobiles. Precious metals, including titanium and nickel from aircraft-engine maintenance plants, are recycled to make watch parts. In addition, jumbo-jet tires are retrodden after between 100 and 170 flights and used again.
Used plastic sheeting is compressed then recycled.
