Here is a look at the history of JAL’s ground staff uniforms, from the year the company was founded to the present day.
1966 - 1969
1st Generation Uniform
1966 - 1969
Open
Wore the same uniform as the 3rd generation uniform.
Designed by Mohei Ito.
June 1966
- The Beatles arrived in Japan on a Japan Airlines flight and performed at Budokan.
March 1967
- Launched a round-the-world route.
1969.6 - 1973.12
2nd Generation Uniform
June, 1969 - December 1973
Open
A clean, neat look in sky-blue and navy-blue. Separate summer and winter uniforms. A cape for cold days.
Designed by Hanae Mori.
March 1970
- Began independent operation of the Tokyo–Paris route via Moscow (Tokyo–Moscow–Paris).
July 1970
- Introduced Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet aircraft.
October 1972
- Operated a special flight to transport two giant pandas, KanKan and LanLan.
1974.1 - 1987.12
3rd Generation Uniform
January 1974 - December 1987

Blouse with crane print pattern. Job types are distinguished by color.
Navy-blue and red for agents working at the counter, and navy-blue and white for general office staff.
May 1978
- Opened New Tokyo International Airport (Narita).
April 1986
- Started direct flights to Europe.
November 1987
- Completed full privatization.

4th Generation Uniform
January 1988 - March 2004

Sharp deep-blue color with two-tone cap and tight slit skirt.
Slim-waisted jacket and cardigan. Designed by Junko Shimada.
April 1990
- Began operation of Boeing 747-400 aircraft.
June 1994
- Launched JAL Super Resort Express Service on the Honolulu route (Pacific Paradise Project, Reso'cha).
October 1996
- Introduced JAL Executive Class "SEASONS."

5th Generation Uniform
April 2004 - May 2013

Concept of design: “Japanese tradition and pride, Aspirations toward the sky”
The jacket was woven with Hishi-mon (diamond pattern), which is used for formal suits, and the scarf, with Seigaiha mon (blue ocean wave pattern), which expressed happiness spreading beyond the sea and sky.

- Merger of Japan Airlines and Japan Air System management.
December 2007
- Launched First Class on JAL domestic flights.
January 2013
- Launched JAL international SKY SUITE 777 with new seats in all classes.

6th Generation Uniform
June 2013 -

The first joint effort by cabin attendants and a designer to develop a uniform. Jacket length is 80% of total length. Shirts come in two sleeve lengths (short or three-quarter length) and two colors (pink or blue). The off-white lounge jacket is embroidered with cherry blossoms. Designed by Keita Maruyama.
September 2019
- Launched A350-900 aircraft.
March 2020
- Transported the Olympic torch.
