Systematic Alcohol and Drug Screening

Systematic alcohol testing

The flight crew conducts alcohol tests before and after the series of flight, using a detector designated by the company and following the prescribed procedure, to confirm that there is no influence of alcohol.

Risk Management System

We have established the 'Special Committee on Alcohol-related Measures' and the 'Special Committee on Alcohol-related Measures in Each Division' to monitor the actual status of alcohol risks in daily management services, as well as to monitor the functioning of risk management and continuously make necessary improvements. (For details, please refer to Safety Management Structure.) Additionally, we are strengthening our testing system by introducing technologies such as facial recognition and advanced test equipment. For more information on our risk management process, please refer to Safety Risk Management.

Test Equipment

To prevent impersonation, we have introduced a testing system that uses facial recognition technology. Additionally, a highly accurate blow-in test equipment is used. Furthermore, we regularly calibrate the equipment and manage it properly to ensure accurate testing.

Management of Test Results

A third party constantly monitors test results to ensure that they are obtained in a timely manner. In addition, a record of test results is created and kept for more than one year (*).
(*) Records of failed tests are kept until one year after the flight crew member concerned retires.

Education on Alcohol

Every year, we conduct training for all JAL Group employees to review alcohol problems that have occurred in the JAL Group, other airlines, and other industries, to prevent the awareness from becoming a mere formality, and to reconfirm correct knowledge about alcohol to ensure thorough self-management and responsible behavior as JAL Group employees.
Additionally, to maintain strict collective norms regarding alcohol consumption, we run campaigns promoting moderate and appropriate drinking practices and hold seminars to raise awareness.

A confidential consultation service is available for flight crew members who have concerns about alcohol consumption (JAL Peer Support Program). The JAL Peer Support Program is also available for family members of crew members, and provides a confidential environment for crew members, their family members, partners, and colleagues to receive support (counseling) so that they do not feel alone in their problems.

Systematic drug screening

The flight crew conducts systematic screening for drugs. Additionally, we have established a risk management system as follows and appropriately manage the examination results.

Risk Management System

We screen for drugs through questioning by a psychiatrist when hiring flight crew members (*).
(*) The following items are checked using the recruitment physical examination questionnaire: "Use of narcotics, stimulants, hallucinogens, etc.," "Drug and alcohol dependence," "Use of antiepileptic drugs," "Use of tranquilizers," "Use of over-the-counter or physician-prescribed hypnotics," and "Use of other drugs."

Additionally, we have established the Flight Crew Medical Management and Wellness Promotion Department responsible for the health management and occupational safety of flight crew members, staffed with professional physicians. This department conducts health check-ups and medical examinations for flight crew members, provides health management education, and implements fitness promotion measures to enhance health awareness and promote well-being. Furthermore, we conduct research and studies on the health management and aviation medicine of flight crew members, working to reduce risks from a health management perspective.
For general information on the risk management process, please refer to Safety Risk Management.

Management of Inspection Results

The records of aviation medical examinations are appropriately stored in the Flight Crew Medical Management and Wellness Promotion Department to support each pilot in operating in a healthy condition. By conducting periodic inspections and appropriately storing inspection records, we ensure that pilots maintain the mental and physical conditions necessary to perform their duties through the establishment of an effective system.

■ Establishment of an In-house Consultation Office

We have established an in-house helpline to encourage pilots to report any potential drug consumption in a way to protect their privacy and does not jeopardize their position.
