Mental health support for pilots
The duties of flight crew are significantly different from other professions, making it difficult for general support to understand the issues faced by flight crew. Therefore, it becomes difficult for them to open up about their inner feelings. To prevent the occurrence of unsafe events caused by substance dependence, including alcohol, or mental anxiety, it is necessary to establish a system where crew members can easily confide their concerns in a confidential environment and receive detailed support tailored to each individual.
JAL Peer Support Program:JPSP
The JPSP is a program operated by flight crew with the aim of providing mental support and a place where they can always feel connected and consult with someone. The program includes over 20 trained members and Mental Health Professionals (MHPs: clinical psychologists), offering support in a confidential environment to flight crew members who are struggling, as well as their families, partners, and colleagues. This ensures that flight crew members do not have to face their problems alone.
This program is independent of the company, meaning there is no intervention from the company, although the company supports this initiative. Additionally, the content of consultations and personal names are protected, and no information will be disclosed outside the program without the consent of the person seeking help.
Similar support systems are being developed within various companies of the JAL Group, tailored to their operational environments and organizational scales.
